Sacred & Seen

Where Stories Meet, Identities Connect, and Every Voice is Sacred.

The first time I held a strand of mala beads, I didn’t quite know what to do with them. They were smooth and beautiful in my hands, almost like tiny anchors strung together. At first, I thought they were simply jewelry—something symbolic, maybe spiritual, but decorative all the same.

But one day, I found myself holding them during a moment of overwhelm. My chest was heavy, my thoughts spinning in circles, and I just needed something to ground me. Instinctively, I started moving my fingers along the beads. One bead, one inhale. Next bead, one exhale. Slowly, the chaos inside of me began to quiet.

It felt as if the beads were teaching me something I had forgotten: that I don’t have to hold everything at once. I only need to hold the moment I’m in.

Since then, mala beads have become more than an object—they’ve become a rhythm, a practice, a companion in my healing. When I pray, they guide me. When I meditate, they focus me. When I can’t find the words, they remind me to breathe.

And here’s the thing: it’s not really about the beads themselves. It’s about the presence they create. The reminder that peace doesn’t come all at once—it comes bead by bead, breath by breath, moment by moment.

Reflection 🌙

Think about the last time you felt scattered, overwhelmed, or anxious. Did you notice your breath? Did you give yourself permission to pause, even for a moment? The truth is, your breath has always been your anchor. Tools like mala beads simply help us remember to slow down and return to it.

Maybe you don’t have beads, but you have your body. Your heartbeat. Your inhale and exhale. That rhythm is always available to you.

Affirmation 💛

“With every breath, I return to myself. I don’t have to do it all right now. I only need to take the next breath, the next step, the next moment. I am grounded. I am present. I am whole.”

A Simple Guided Mala Bead Practice 🌿

If you’re new to mala beads, here’s a gentle way to begin:

  1. Find a quiet space.
Sit comfortably with your spine tall and shoulders relaxed. Hold your mala in your dominant hand.
  2. Set an intention.
This can be a prayer, a mantra, or even a simple word like peace, clarity, or love.
  3. Start at the guru bead.
The larger bead, sometimes with a tassel, is your starting and ending point. Hold it gently, take a deep breath, and focus on your intention.
  4. Move bead by bead.
With your thumb and fingers, move to the next bead. Inhale deeply. As you exhale, repeat your chosen word or mantra silently (or aloud). Example: Inhale: I am safe. Exhale: I am present.
  5. Continue the circle.
Work your way around the mala, bead by bead, breath by breath. Don’t rush. Let the rhythm of your breath guide you.
  6. Pause at the guru bead.
Once you’ve completed the circle, stop at the guru bead again. Take three deep breaths, offer gratitude for the moment, and gently release your practice.

✨ Even five minutes of this practice can bring calm, clarity, and grounding. It’s not about “doing it perfectly”—it’s about showing up for yourself, one bead and one breath at a time.

Sacred and Seen is a space where the intersections of identity are honored, and the sacredness of every story is uplifted. Through authentic conversations and reflections, we explore how experiences of race, gender, spirituality, motherhood, queerness, and culture shape who we are and how we connect. Rooted in the belief that our stories are interwoven and powerful, Sacred and Seen creates a space for deep listening, vulnerability, and collective healing—where every voice is seen, heard, and valued.
